Monolithic binary stiffness building blocks for mechanical digital machines

We introduce two essential building blocks with binary stiffness for mechanical digital machines. The large scale fully compliant mechanisms have rectilinear and rotational kinematics use a new V-shaped negative structure to create extreme states of by static balancing. bistable switch allows us toggle between near-zero-stiffness high-stiffness states, effectively turning off on stiffness. A reduction 98.8 % 99.9 is achieved linear rotary motion over range 13.3 (20 mm) 0.4 rad (23°) respectively. Stiffness can be reversibly changed toggling the switch, or irreversibly actuating main stage. These could set stage type logic, adaptive programmable metamaterials other types devices. Practical machines materials require miniaturized easily micro-manufactured components. therefore carefully considered scalability integrating all required structures into planar monolithic architecture. This miniaturization fabrication conventional surface-micro-machining additive manufacturing such as photolithography, two-photon lithography fused deposition modeling.
